Women in Jazz


An all-women jazz quintet featuring piano, bass, drums, horn and voice, explores America's greatest art form through the music of the women who made jazz history. Students will learn about the significant contributions to the evolution of the music made by women such as pianist/arranger/composer Mary Lou Williams, trombonist Melba Liston and legendary vocalists Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith.


The key elements and characteristics of jazz will be discussed and demonstrated as the band performs the music of these great female jazz artists.
