Creative Alternatives for Youth-at-Risk (CAYR)


Creative Alternatives for Youth At Risk (CAYR) is a safe-haven, after school program for a select group of students with social, behavioral, or emotional issues. Arts Horizons provides the only school program of this type that employs professional teaching artists and arts therapists who address important issues through the arts, such as violence, racism, substance abuse, poverty and school attendance.



CAYR Goals:

Goal 1: To improve student?s social behaviors

  • To develop improved self discipline, self esteem and greater obedience to rules and directions.
  • To develop respect and tolerance in their interaction with peers and adults.
  • To avert disruptive/defiant (violent) behavior.
  • To increase willingness to help peers and work cooperatively in groups.

Goal 2: To increase students? engagement in learning activities

  • To develop critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills
  • To strengthen the ability to stay on task and complete projects.
  • To apply constructive behavior and self-control as guides to participation in class projects.
